Where Mac OS XвЂ™s Disk Utility falls short, iPartition steps in with non-destructive features for modifying HFS+, FAT, and NTFS partitions. They just rarely have the tools to do it.

ItвЂ™s fairly common for Mac users to want to create, delete, resize, move, or clone hard drive partitions. It is powerful enough to impress those who know what theyвЂ™re doing, yet simple enough for non-techies to get the job done. IPartition is definitely one of my new favorite Mac utilities. Time Machine ran its next backup without a hitch вЂ“ especially now that it had more room to work with.

None of my data was lost on either partition and Mac OS X instantly recognized the new partition sizes. It took a couple hours to complete the task вЂ“ probably because there was so much data on the disk вЂ“ but it worked perfectly. With my changes made, I clicked the Go button at the top of the window and let iPartition do its thing.

Since my 200GB Time Machine partition was full and the 300GB storage partition had less than 100GB of data on it, I decided to resize both partitions to allocate more space to the Time Machine side. It has my Time Machine backup on one partition, while the second serves as extra storage space for larger files I donвЂ™t keep on my MacBook Pro. While I was putting iPartition through its paces for this review, I worked with a 500GB USB external hard drive that I use for a number of purposes. iPartition can do this and more with ease вЂ“ and without losing any data. Or maybe youвЂ™ve already got a split disk and you want to get rid of the extra partitions so it has just one. For example, you might want to split your MacвЂ™s 1TB hard drive into two partitions so you can dual boot Mac OS X and another operating system. The software lets users modify a hard driveвЂ™s partitions as they see fit, without reformatting. IPartition is a Mac application created by Coriolis Systems, and itвЂ™s available for $44.95 through the developerвЂ™s website. Data loss is not an option for most folks, so a third party tool is needed in order to get the job done. And a lot of what Disk Utility can do requires the user to reformat the disk first. Moving partitions is impossible altogether. Unfortunately, its resizing capabilities have always been hit or miss.

After that, the 'Macintosh HD' label reappeared, the check command ran without a hitch, and I was able to boot back into Snow Leopard, without any data loss to speak of. Although I was unable to 'check/repair' either of them with GParted, I was able to delete the 16 GB partition. Unlike in Disk Utility, the drive did appear to be partitioned, and I saw my large HFS+ partition (unlabeled, though) and another small partition. Yes, I had a Time Machine backup to restore from, but before doing that I decided to try booting from a GParted LiveCD. It showed no partitions at all on the drive, and the verify and repair options were grayed out.

I booted from the Snow Leopard install DVD and ran Disk Utility. only a 'Windows' disk was available (not the install CD). I was shocked to discover that my 'Macintosh HD' startup disk was gone.

Something didn't seem right, so I exited the installer and rebooted, holding the option key for the boot menu. The first time I installed XP, I remember seeing two partitions listed with 'Unpartitioned space' between them in the list. When running the XP installer, I noticed I was only shown a single 'C:' partition as an option for the install location.

This time I used BCA and set the size of the new partition to 16 GB. I had partitioned my harddrive into one 276 GB Mac partition and one 5 GB Windows partition, but decided to delete the Windows partition and start over. My Macintosh HD startup disk disappeared today, but I was able to use GParted to delete a small partition from the drive and the missing disk reappeared.Д«oot Camp Assistant got me into this hot water when I was preparing to reinstall XP.
